Voutyras Dimosthenes |
Dimosthenes Voutyras (1872-1958) is an avant-garde writer who challenged Greek literary tradition. His numerous short stories, written for the most part in the first half of the 20th century, formed a portrait of Greece in a period of great social upheaval that spanned from the Greek-Turkish war in 1897 and culminated to the Nazi occupation and the Greek resistance. Through his strong social critique and his innovative style, Voutyras paved the path for Greek modernism. Gothic tales hold an important place in his work, a selection of which appears in the short story collection The Ship of Death and Other Stories (Topos 2009), compiled and edited by historian Vasias Tsokopoulos, as well as in the graphic novel Pararlama and other stories based on his stories. |
