In Voutyras’s dark tales society equals hell and happiness is a lie that sedates human conscience. Subverting social conventions is impossible; life is governed by irrational laws, and dominated by distorted thoughts and scary shadows. The short stories included in The Ship of Death are literary gems, small masterpieces that echo Edgar Alan Poe at his best, and deserve to be reread and reevaluated. The collection has been compiled and edited by historian Vasias Tsokopoulos, literary editor of Voutyras’s Collected Works. |
